"Free Hugs" read the cardboard sign a shaggy haired, large teenage boy was holding up. You pass by skeptically, detecting that his intents are less than innocent.
"Come on," he says, "what would Jesus do?"
Jesus, possibly, would have hugged, but more than likely he would lead him to Matthew chapter five and suggest he take a good hard look there.
I honestly am not a big fan of this statement, "What Would Jesus Do," or rather, I find it needs greater clarification. You are not Jesus. No one is Jesus except...well...Jesus.
Isaiah 55: 8-9 says,
"'For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,'
declares the Lord.
neither are your ways my ways,'
declares the Lord.
As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts."
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts."
This verse is not saying that God's wisdom is attainable by Christians. This verse says that we CAN NOT know what God is thinking, or why He does what He does.
Now, Jesus is God, part of the triune godhead consisting of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. "LORD" is another term for God. So this verse can also be applied to Christ.
"WWJD" means that we would know what Jesus would do, which this verse clearly proves we can't. Very few of us actually have faith enough to hear what God is saying directly to you at every moment of the day. In some parts of the Bible, Jesus will rebuke people at what seems like random. In reality, we simply lack His understanding. Another reason for this is because we can't see peoples' hearts, so we don't know an accurate time to rebuke people often rather than love them.
I think a MUCH better abbreviation to put on the millions of bracelets in the world would be: "WWJHMD." Translated "What Would Jesus Have Me Do." I think if we look at situations from a "What would He have me do" perspective, a lot of situations will be easier to think through.
After all, the Bible tells us what we should do, it does not tell us too much about why He does what He does.
